iPhone 6 VS Samsung Galaxy S5
Apple has officially announced the iPhone6. How does it compare to the Samsung Galaxy S5?
If you're in the market for a new phone, odds are you have your eyes on the two of the biggest phones available or anticipated right now, the iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S5. We're here to help you sort out which phone is best for you before the iPhone 6 is released September 19th.
Battery Life
For a lot of people, battery life is the biggest concern with most of the smartphones currently available having one-days' worth of use. The iPhone 6 can get up to 14 hours of talk time on 3G, the iPhone 6 Plus can get up to 24 hours of talk time on 3G and the Samsung Galaxy S5 can get up to 21 hours talk time on 3G. A feature of the Galaxy S5 that may sway some users is the fact that it has a removable battery whereas most smartphones sold today do not have that option, the iPhone included.
Our pick: this one is a little tricky. The Galaxy S5 is slightly larger (5.1 inch display vs the 4.7 inch display of the iPhone 6) and the battery life is considerably higher. The average user will be best off with the Galaxy S5 but if you're a power user who routinely drains their phones' battery, the iPhone 6 might be your best bet with the largest screen of them all at 5.5 inches.
Camera
Another major purchasing decision point is the camera, which is where the Galaxy S5 really shines. It features an incredibly impressive 16 MP camera capable of recording 4K Ultra HD video and has a 2 MP forward-facing camera that is capable of recording 1080p HD video. The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus both have the same camera capabilities; 8 MP camera capable of recording 1080p HD video and a 1.2 MP forward-facing capable of recording 720p HD video.
Our pick: the Galaxy S5 blows the iPhone out of the water in this category. The camera has twice as many pixels and the 4K Ultra HD recording capabilities is unparalleled by any other phone on the market, including the iphone 6.
Storage Capacity
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus can be purchased in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB models and the Galaxy S5 is available in 16GB or 32 GB. It should be noted that the Samsung's storage capacity can be increased by adding a microSD card and can accommodate sizes up to 128 GB. The 128GB iPhone will cost you $399 with a contract and a 32GB Galaxy S5 will cost $200 with a contract. A 128GB microSD card can cost as low as $106 on Amazon so if storage is a huge concern, either phone will suit your needs but you will need to purchase an SD card to get that same storage with a Galaxy 5.
Our pick: this one is a bit of a toss-up due to the fact that the Galaxy can be expanded to the same size as the iPhone. It would be cheaper to get the Galaxy and purchase a microSD card but not everyone will want to go through the hassle so this is more of a personal preference, especially if you don't require more than 32GB of storage.
Operating System and Processor
The iPhone 6 of course uses iOS while the Galaxy S5 uses Android 4.4.2. These are two completely different operating systems so they are very difficult to compare with each other, especially when you take the different processors into account. The iPhone has a custom 64-bit A8 chip while Samsung uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core 2.5GHz processor. Trying to compare those two is essentially trying to compare apples to oranges especially when you take into account the completely different operating systems which is really what dictates how fast your phone can run and how long the battery will last.
Display
The S5 has a 5.1 inch 1920x1080 Super AMOLED display for a total of 432ppi (pixels per inch) vs the iPhone 6's 4.7 inch 1334x750 screen for a total of 326ppi. Until we can get our hands on an iPhone 6 it is going to be very hard to determine which screen is better because the two display are very different with Apple using the highly-acclaimed retina display and Samsung using the AMOLED HD screen.
Our pick: this one is too difficult to call until we can get an iPhone 6 to test with.
Extra features
Both phones have unique features that may not be key features but may be enough to sway some people one way or another. The Galaxy S5 is waterproof which can be a huge wallet saver if you're prone to dropping your phone into your dog's water dish or if you've ever had a phone slip out of your back pocket and straight into the toilet.
The Galaxy S5 is also very health conscious with a built in heart rate monitor and is also capable of functioning as a pedometer.
The iPhone 6 of course comes with the beautiful, simplistic styling that has made Apple so famous. As one of the world's premier brands, there are an enormous amount of accessories available for iPhones so you will never find yourself lacking in options when looking for a cool case or a dock to use at home.
